We have all heard about Calculating our Carbon Footprint, The average American uses about 115 to 150 gallons of water/day. However, this is just household use for drinking, cooking, bathing, cleaning, flushing the toilet, laundry, and yard work. This does not account for what is called 'virtual water' or 'hidden water'. Virtual water is the amount of water needed to produce the things we use everyday such as: the vegetables we eat, the clothes we wear, the products we use and the electricity we need. Water is required for everything we use and consume. See the table below for the amount of water needed to produce commonly used items.
With this in mind we can also see that by reducing consumption of products and recycling whenever possible we can conserve water resources. You can Calculate your Water Fooprint and discover how much virtual water you use daily. The average in the United States is 1,225 gallons/person/day.
