The theme of this year's World Water Day is 'Sanitation'.  40% of the World's population, over 2.4 billion people live without access to sanitation.  Many do not have access to water or the infrastructure for proper sanitation.  In addition, without access to sanitation existing water resources become contaminated.  The United Nations reported in 2002 that nearly 5,500 children die every day from diseases caused by contaminated food and water.  This is a time for us all to think about the importance of water in our lives and check out our programs that solve the problems of sanitation and water scarcity simultaneously.  As a part of the Millienum Development Goals the United Nations set out the following goals for water, sanitation, and the environment.

• Integrate the principles of sustainable development into country policies and programs; reverse loss of environmental resources
• Reduce by half the proportion of people without sustainable access to safe drinking water
• Achieve significant improvement in lives of at least 100 million slum dwellers, by 2020
